Update your MCS-150

posted in Blog by

Motor Carriers have come to realize the importance of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Comprehensive, Safety, Accountability (CSA) program.  Safety violations for each carrier are measured and scored against carriers of similar size and number of miles traveled.

The data used to compare carriers of similar size and miles traveled comes from the carriers Motor Carrier Registration form, known as the MCS-150. A carrier files an MCS-150 when obtaining the US DOT number. The form asks for number of trucks, drivers and miles traveled. The FMCSA assumes that each carrier will update their MCS-150 information every two years or more allowing the CSA safety measurement system to use the most current information available when determining a safety score.

The FMCSA is now saying that for the January 2013 CSA calculations, if a carriers MCS-150 has not been updated since 2010, the data provided will not be used. Instead, the calculation will use a default of averages over the previous 18 months.  Using averages can impact a carriers percentiles in the safety measurement system scoring process. View the SMS Methodology for addition details on percentile calculations.

We recommend that all carriers update their MCS-150 now with your 2012 data to ensure that the FMCSA is using the most accurate data available to calculate your percentiles.  If you need help updating your MCS-150, we can help.  Call us at 503-607-1088.
