The Most Dangerous Highways in America

Every year, over 30,000 people are killed in road crashes in the United States.

For GeoTab to determine the most dangerous highway in each US state, they calculated a Fatal Crash Rate that is based on the annual number of road fatalities and fatal crashes according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, adjusted for the average daily traffic counts provided by the Federal Highway Administration.

The state highway with the worst Fatal Crash Rate than any other state in the last 10 years was a section of Florida’s US-1. There was over 1050 fatalities and 1011 crashes on this stretch. This highway beat the infamous “Bloody 98” highway along Florida’s panhandle. The second worst highway in terms of Fatal Crash Rates was Texas’ US-83, running North and South along the center of the state. US-83 is also known as the Texas Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway. This highway has had an average of 26 fatal crashes a year over the last 10 years.

geotab's top 6 fatal crash state highwaysThe state highway with the most fatal crashes, other than Florida’s US-1, was Tennessee’s I-40  experiences over 43 fatal crashes each year. This highway is so important to Tennessee because it connects the state’s three largest cities. Along I-40 in Tennessee, there was 437 crashes with 517 fatalities. Other top state highway’s includes New Mexico’s I-40 (34 fatal accidents each year), Alabama’s I-65 (33 fatal accidents each year), and Louisiana’s US Highway 90 (27 fatal crashes each year).

For those in the Northwest, Oregon’s worst highway was not I-5, but US Route 101 along the Pacific Ocean coast. Hwy 101 is great for a scenic trip, but there and an average of 34 fatal crashes each year.  Washington’s section of I-5 is the busiest highway in the state of Washington. There are nearly 25 fatal crashes each year.

The states are ranked in order of the Fatal Crash Rate of their most dangerous highways. Thus, Florida comes out on top because its most dangerous highway (US-1) has the highest Fatal Crash Rate than ‘most dangerous highways’ of other states. Rhode Island’s most dangerous highway (Route 95), on the other hand, has the lowest Fatal Crash Rate among most dangerous highways of other states, but does not mean that Route 95 is the safest highway in the United States.
