Differences and Similarities between an ELD and IFTA Compliant Data Recording Systems

Buyers Beware!  What you need to know before buying an Electronic Logging Device:

eld-ifta-ebookThe FMCSA has mandated that drivers who currently use paper Records of Duty Status (driver logs) convert to an approved ELD system by Dec 2017.

When approaching this conversion, the first question to ask is: Do I want a device that just meets the ELD requirement or do I want a device that can also accomplish other regulatory compliance requirements such as IFTA?   If the answer is: I want a device that will meet both ELD and IFTA requirements, selecting the right device becomes critical!

Device functions and requirements for a compliant ELD and a compliant IFTA data recording device have some similarities but they are not the same!  Not understanding the differences and selecting the wrong device can get you into a costly compliance nightmare.

Equally important to buying the right device is understanding how manage the device and data appropriately to accomplish regulatory compliance.  A device may be 100% compliant for the requirements of the regulator but if you don’t have the internal controls to manage it correctly, like any tool, it won’t get the job done.
